Field Renovations

At the end of the 2018 fall season, Woodcreek Little League and the City of Roseville Parks & Recreation were able to get a massive field renovation project started at the Mahany baseball complex.

The project took about 3 months total and it was overseen by our field director, Aaron Madsen. Aaron had a field renovation committee that help keep an eye on the project with him through the entire process. The board approved a total of $95,000.00 for this project. Aaron was able to stay on time with the project and he came in $5,000.00 under budget! The league had been saving up over the past several years to be able to do this level of a renovation. The main work was done from Dominguez Landscape, a great contact brought to us by board member, Chris Murray. Dominguez has been involved in several big and high profile baseball field/complex renovations in our area. The work they did for others served us really well in being able to get top grade materials at our price point, with minimal pitfalls to worry about. The project included all new infield dirt (a high grade baseball mix) on all 4 fields. The dirt was a special mix that is designed to help hold a good amount of moisture without compromising the integrity of the dirt, as well as wick the extra water away. We had all 4 fields laser leveled so that the grading of the dirt would help move water off the field and towards the drains. This allows for a faster drying time and less field closures due to rain. We had all the pitching mounds brought back to little standards, making sure that they were back to the best form they have been in since the park opened. We lined bases back up and raised all 4 of the home plates back to their proper height. All 4 fields got a new hybrid grass infield that was purchased at a great price from Ewing Landscape, a contact from Aaron. The grass is named Latitude 36 Bermuda Grass, and is a special blend used on baseball fields and golf courses. It takes less watering and is more durable. The root system grows across the ground, not just straight down. The grass is able to be cut shorter and it allows for a slightly faster infield. It goes dormant during the fall and winter and will turn a tan/brown color. Woodcreek Little League and the city will over seed it in the winter with a cross seeding plan that will bring the green color back during those dormant month. When Aaron told the city about the grass, they were beyond excited about it. The city has been using the same kind of grass for some of their new projects and some of their renovations. The city says they love that the grass uses less water, and they raved about the durability of it. We added dirt to the bullpens as well to get them back up to a higher standard. Dominguez rolled the outfields of all 4 fields as well. This was to smooth out any major high spots and to reduce the uneven playing surfaces. This is something all the high school fields have been doing for years before each season. It's a great way to keep the play-ability of the field and to prolong the life of what's already in place.

Our goal with this renovation was to make the fields safer for the players. Over the years the normal wear and tear brought a few problem areas out there for the players. The board agreed that it was time to use the funds we had to make the fields the best they could be. We believe the work at Mahany has brought a safer level of play and a higher level of baseball, along with a seriously beautiful look that Roseville is known for.

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who has been part of our league. We used registration fees, sponsorship money, money raised at our fundraising events, money from the purchase of spirit wear and money made at the snack bar for this project. We cannot thank you all enough for being a part of this project through your membership and association with our league! This truly was a community project that we all will continue to benefit from. We are really proud to have been part of this project as Woodcreek Little League!!!
